From the geometry of space to the statistics underpinning medical trials, from the algorithms driving artificial intelligence to the equations modelling climate systems, mathematics provides the framework through which we understand and predict the behaviour of the world. The discipline combines the pursuit of abstract truth through rigorous proof with the application of quantitative tools to problems across science, technology, economics and society, and it has fascinated and challenged some of the sharpest minds in human history.
