Astrophysics is concerned with understanding the universe beyond our atmosphere, from the planets and moons of the solar system to stars in all stages of their life cycles, the vast structures of galaxies, and the large-scale architecture of the cosmos itself. It applies the tools of physics and mathematics to questions that have captivated human curiosity for millennia: how stars are born, live and die, what dark matter and dark energy are, how the universe began and how it may end.
