About this course

Astrophysics is the application of the principles of physics to the study of astronomical objects and the universe as a whole. It asks how stars form, live, and die, what lies at the hearts of galaxies, how the solar system came to be, and what the large-scale structure and ultimate fate of the universe are. The discipline spans the solar system, gas giants and terrestrial worlds, red giants, white dwarfs, neutron stars, quasars, cosmological questions about dark matter and dark energy, and the earliest moments of the universe. It draws on quantum mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism to build models that can be tested against observation. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time degree incorporates the broad disciplines of astronomy as described on the programme, engaging with cosmology and galactic astronomy, the solar system, stellar evolution, and e
