AI already handles a lot of the day-to-day output here, but the law requires human oversight. That human could be you. That part is not going away. Get fluent with the tools, and lean hard into the part of the job that structurally needs a person.

The role

As a stockbroker, you buy and sell shares for your clients - usually people or organizations with money to invest. You study the markets carefully to spot good opportunities and advise your clients on what to buy or sell. You work in a fast-paced environment where prices change quickly and you need to make quick, smart decisions.

Your day starts early, reviewing what happened in the markets overnight. You spend time analysing companies and looking at global news that might affect share prices. You also talk to clients a lot, understanding what they want to achieve with their money and making sure they feel confident about the advice you give them. You need to be very precise when you execute trades, and you work under pressure to get good results for your clients.

Daily responsibilities

  • Analyze market trends and economic data to inform trading decisions.
  • Execute buy and sell orders on behalf of clients, ensuring optimal timing and pricing.
  • Communicate regularly with clients to provide updates and advice on their investment portfolios.
  • Research and recommend investment opportunities based on client goals and risk tolerance.
  • Monitor and manage client accounts, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices.
  • Prepare detailed reports on market conditions and performance for clients and stakeholders.
  • Attend financial seminars and training to stay updated on market changes and investment strategies.

Does a degree help here?

A UK degree, particularly in finance, economics, or business, provides a solid foundation in financial principles and market dynamics. Graduates from UK institutions are often highly regarded for their critical thinking skills and practical knowledge, giving them a competitive edge in the stockbroking field.

AI EXPOSURE = the share of a job's day-to-day tasks AI can already do today, from the same exposure engine used across this site (Anthropic labour market research, 2026, observed real-world AI usage by occupation). Higher means more exposed. It is a measurement of now, not a prediction. THE DOOR = how hard the job is to get into, grade A (easy) to E (extremely hard), from each career's published forecast (OpenAI, "The AI Jobs Transition Framework", Richmond 2026, CC BY 4.0). A card marked MOAT NOT YET CLASSIFIED has a real exposure score but no entry yet in our moat register, so we make no claim about what structurally protects it. Scorecard grades and verdicts are Careermash editorial judgment: we show forecasts as forecasts and own our conclusions. Salary and pathway figures are each career's own published profile. Careermash is a service provided by What School Ltd.
