The role

As a Pathologist, you work in a laboratory, examining tissue samples and other samples from patients to find out what disease they have. You look down a microscope, use lab tests, and study the results carefully so you can tell other doctors the right answer. Your diagnosis is crucial - it tells them whether someone has cancer, an infection, or something else, and guides what treatment they should have.

You work closely with surgeons and other doctors, talking through what you have found and how it affects the person's care. Sometimes you will also perform autopsies - examining someone who has died to work out what caused their death. This is an important part of medical knowledge and helps families understand what happened. The work is precise and demanding, and you need to stay up to date with new science and technology. You make a real difference to patient care.

Daily responsibilities

  • Examine and interpret laboratory results, including biopsies and cytology specimens.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to discuss patient diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Conduct autopsies to determine the cause of death and provide insights into disease processes.
  • Utilize advanced technology and techniques in histopathology and molecular pathology.
  • Educate medical students and residents on pathology practices and findings.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to provide expert opinions on patient cases.
  • Stay updated on the latest research and advancements in pathology and related fields.
