The role
As a paediatric nurse, you look after babies, children and teenagers in hospitals, clinics and community health centres. You give them medicines, take blood tests, monitor their health and make sure they are comfortable. But your job is about more than just medical care - you have to be calm and kind because children can be frightened, and you need to help their parents understand what is happening.
Your day involves checking on patients, giving them treatment, answering questions from worried parents and explaining what will happen next in a way children can understand. You work as part of a team with doctors, social workers and other staff to make sure each child gets exactly what they need. Sometimes you look after very ill children and need to work quickly and calmly in emergencies. You help children feel safer and less scared, which is just as important as the medical care you give.
Daily responsibilities
