The role

As a pest controller, you go into homes and buildings to find and get rid of unwanted pests - rats, cockroaches, wasps, ants, spiders or bedbugs. You are a mix of detective and problem-solver, tracking down where pests are hiding and working out the best way to remove them. You might use traps, sprays, exclusion techniques (blocking their entry points) or other methods depending on the pest and the situation.

Your day starts with inspecting a building carefully, looking for droppings, damage, or other signs that pests are there. You talk to the customer about what they have seen and what they need. Then you set up a plan to deal with the problem and come back to check it is working. You spend a lot of time on your feet, visiting different places, and you need to be comfortable going into attics, crawl spaces and dirty areas. The work is not glamorous but it matters - pests spread disease and cause damage, so your work keeps people safe and protects buildings.

Daily responsibilities

  • Develop and implement effective pest management plans tailored to specific environments.
  • Utilize a range of control methods, including chemical treatments, traps, and biological solutions.

  • Collaborate with local authorities and environmental agencies to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Stay updated on the latest pest control technologies and best practices through continuous training.
