Level Crossing Attendant
Level crossing attendants keep roads and railways safe where they meet. They monitor the crossing, operate the barriers, and make sure both drivers and pedestrians can cross safely.

The role
As a level crossing attendant, you are responsible for the safety of everyone who uses the crossing - car drivers, lorries, pedestrians, cyclists, everyone. You watch the signals, operate the barriers, and talk to train drivers and the control centre. You are the person people turn to if they have questions or problems.
You need to be alert and ready to act fast if something goes wrong. You inspect the crossing equipment regularly to spot any faults, and you help the local community understand how to cross safely. The job means working at peak times when there is lots of traffic, and you must stay calm and focused even when things are busy. You are the reason people get home safely.
Daily responsibilities
- Monitor and operate crossing signals and barriers to ensure safe passage for vehicles and pedestrians.
- Communicate effectively with train drivers and control centres regarding crossing operations.
- Conduct regular inspections of crossing equipment and report any faults or maintenance needs.
- Engage with the public to provide safety information and address concerns about crossing practices.
- Respond promptly to emergencies or incidents at the crossing, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
