Farm Labourer
Farm workers keep the UK fed. They grow crops and look after animals, working outdoors in all weathers and using farm machinery and modern farming techniques.

The role
As a farm labourer, you do the practical work that keeps a farm running. Your day changes with the seasons - you might be planting seeds in spring, tending animals all year round, harvesting crops in autumn, or fixing equipment and fences in winter. You'll work outdoors most of the time, in sun, wind and rain.
The job is physically demanding and the hours can be long, especially at busy times of year. But if you like working outside, enjoy being practical with machinery, and want to know that you're producing food for the country, it can be really satisfying work. You'll learn skills in crop care, animal handling, equipment operation and farm safety - and there's room to progress to more skilled roles like farm supervisor or specialist in areas like organic farming.
Daily responsibilities
- Tending to crops and livestock, including feeding, watering, and monitoring health.
- Operating and maintaining farm machinery, such as tractors and harvesters.
- Planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops according to seasonal schedules.
- Applying fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides as per safety regulations.
- Assisting with the maintenance of farm infrastructure, including fences and buildings.
Does a degree help here?
While a degree is not strictly necessary for farm labourers, having a UK qualification in agriculture or horticulture can significantly enhance your employability. It demonstrates a commitment to the industry and provides essential knowledge about modern farming techniques, sustainability practices, and agricultural business management.
