The role

As a driving examiner, you test people who are learning to drive. You watch them do different driving tasks - parking, handling busy roads, following traffic laws - and decide if they are ready for their licence. You need to stay calm and fair, even if a candidate is nervous.

Most of your day you will be sitting in cars, watching people drive and making notes about what they do well and where they need to improve. You give feedback so they understand what happened in the test. You also keep careful records and follow the rules set by the DVLA to make sure every test is done the same way. The job can be repetitive, but you meet lots of different people.

Daily responsibilities

  • Conduct practical driving tests for various vehicle categories to evaluate candidates' driving skills.
  • Assess candidates' knowledge of road signs, traffic regulations, and safe driving practices.
  • Provide clear and constructive feedback to candidates post-test, highlighting areas for improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records of test results and candidate performance in compliance with regulations.
  • Collaborate with other driving examiners and staff to ensure consistency and fairness in testing procedures.
  • Stay updated on changes in driving laws, regulations, and testing procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in training and development sessions to enhance assessment techniques and skills.
  • Manage time effectively to accommodate the scheduling of driving tests and related administrative duties.
