The role

The work is collecting dogs, walking them safely for a set time, giving them exercise and attention, and returning them happy and cared for. Reliability, road sense and a confident, calm way with dogs matter, especially when handling several at once or dogs that don't always get along.

Most dog walkers are self-employed, fitting walks around the daytime, in all weathers, with income that grows as you take on more regular clients. It is active outdoor work, you cover your own travel and costs, and trust is everything since owners give you keys to their homes.

No qualifications are needed, but insurance, a way with dogs and good local knowledge are essential, and pet first aid is a plus. Most people start by walking for friends and neighbours and build up by word of mouth.
