The role
The work is planning and leading classes, demonstrating moves, correcting technique, choreographing routines and getting students ready for shows or exams. Patience, clear explanation and encouragement matter as much as your own skill, since you teach all ages and abilities and need to keep everyone motivated and safe.
Many teachers are self-employed or work sessions across schools, studios and clubs, often evenings and weekends, with income built up from multiple classes. It is physically active work, and building a steady group of students takes time and word of mouth.
You usually need strong dance training yourself and often a recognised teaching qualification from a dance body, plus first aid and insurance. An enhanced DBS check is needed to teach children, and many teachers come from years of dancing or performing themselves.
