Animal Welfare Worker
Animal welfare workers look after animals that are sick, injured, or have been treated badly. They work in shelters and rescue organizations, helping animals feel safe and teaching people how to take care of their pets properly.

The role
As an animal welfare worker, you help animals that need looking after. You might work in a shelter, a rescue centre or with a charity that protects animals. Your job is to make sure the animals in your care are healthy, happy and safe.
Most days you will feed and groom the animals, give them water and clean their living spaces. You will watch them carefully to spot if any are ill or hurt, and help them feel calm if they are scared or upset. You might also work with the police or RSPCA to help animals that have been neglected or treated badly - that can be sad work sometimes, but it's important because it keeps animals safe. You'll talk to people who want to give a pet a home, making sure they understand what the animal needs.
Daily responsibilities
- Assess the health and wellbeing of animals in shelters or rescue facilities.
- Provide hands-on care, including feeding, grooming, and socializing animals.
- Investigate reports of animal abuse or neglect and collaborate with law enforcement.
- Educate the public about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare issues.
- Coordinate and participate in rescue operations for abandoned or abused animals.
- Maintain accurate records of animal care, health status, and behavior.
- Work with veterinarians to administer medical treatments and vaccinations.
- Develop and implement enrichment programs to enhance animal welfare.
