Anthropology and visual practice is an unusual and genuinely interdisciplinary combination that brings together the social scientific study of human culture with the practice and critical analysis of visual production. Social anthropology examines how human beings organise social life, construct meaning, navigate power, and understand themselves and others, through ethnographic fieldwork and comparative theoretical analysis. Visual practice, encompassing photography, film, video, installation, and other image-based forms, provides both a set of expressive tools and a body of critical inquiry about how visual representation works, what it can and cannot show, and how it shapes knowledge and understanding.
