Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Set Designer
As a Junior Set Designer, you will assist senior designers in creating set designs, learning the ropes of the industry while gaining hands-on experience in model-making and drafting.
Mid-level Set Designer
In a mid-level role, you will take on more responsibility, leading design projects and collaborating closely with directors to bring their visions to life.
Senior Set Designer/Head of Design
At the peak of your career, you will oversee large-scale productions, mentor junior designers, and have a significant influence on the creative direction of projects.
