Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Product Designer
In this entry-level role, you will assist senior designers in creating product concepts and prototypes, gaining hands-on experience in user research and design software.
Mid-level Product Designer
At this stage, you will lead design projects, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, and take ownership of user experience outcomes.
Senior Product Designer / Head of Design
In a senior role, you will oversee design strategy, mentor junior designers, and drive innovation within the organisation, influencing product direction at a high level.
