Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Curator
As a Junior Curator, you will assist in the management of collections, support exhibition development, and engage with visitors. This role is ideal for recent graduates looking to gain practical experience in a museum setting.
Mid-level Curator
In a Mid-level Curator role, you will take on greater responsibility for exhibition planning, collection management, and public engagement, often leading projects and mentoring junior staff.
Senior Curator/Head of Collections
At the peak of your career, you will oversee the entire curatorial department, setting strategic direction, managing budgets, and representing the museum at national and international levels.
