Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Makeup Artist
At this stage, you’ll assist senior artists, learn essential techniques, and build your portfolio while working on various projects, from photoshoots to events.
Freelance Makeup Artist
As a mid-career artist, you’ll have your own clients, work independently, and may collaborate with photographers and stylists on larger projects, showcasing your unique style.
Senior Makeup Artist
At the peak of your career, you’ll lead major projects, mentor junior artists, and may even work with celebrities or on high-profile fashion shows, making a name for yourself in the industry.
