Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Environmental Planner
In this entry-level role, you will assist senior planners in conducting site assessments and preparing reports. You will gain hands-on experience in environmental analysis and stakeholder engagement.
Mid-level Environmental Planner
At this stage, you will lead projects, manage client relationships, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. You will also mentor junior planners and contribute to strategic planning initiatives.
Senior Environmental Planner/Head of Planning
In this peak career role, you will oversee large-scale projects, develop organisational strategies, and represent your company in high-level negotiations with stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
