Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Environmental Biologist
In this entry-level role, you will assist in field studies, data collection, and laboratory analyses, gaining hands-on experience in environmental research.
Mid-level Environmental Biologist
At this stage, you will lead projects, manage field teams, and develop conservation strategies, while also mentoring junior staff.
Senior Environmental Biologist/Head of Conservation
In a senior role, you will oversee large-scale environmental projects, influence policy decisions, and represent your organisation at national and international forums.
