Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Dressmaker
In this role, you will assist senior dressmakers, learning the basics of garment construction and fitting. You will gain hands-on experience in sewing and pattern making while developing your skills in fabric selection and design interpretation.
Mid-Level Dressmaker
As a mid-level dressmaker, you will take on more complex projects, working directly with clients to create custom pieces. You will be responsible for managing your own workload, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality garments, and possibly mentoring junior staff.
Senior Dressmaker
In a senior role, you will lead projects, collaborate with designers, and oversee the production of garments. Your expertise will guide the creative process, and you may also be involved in training new dressmakers and managing client relationships.
