Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Dermatologist
As a Junior Dermatologist, you will begin your career in a clinical setting, gaining hands-on experience under the supervision of senior dermatologists. This stage involves learning the basics of dermatological practice and patient management.
Mid-Level Dermatologist
In this role, you will have more autonomy in patient care, managing a diverse caseload and performing advanced procedures. You will also start to specialise in areas of interest, such as paediatric dermatology or dermatopathology.
Senior Dermatologist
As a Senior Dermatologist, you will lead clinical teams, mentor junior staff, and contribute to research and policy development. Your expertise will be sought after in complex cases, and you may also engage in teaching and public speaking.
