Career Progression Path
Is this the only route?
This is the standard academic trajectory, but modern careers are highly flexible. You can often skip stages by entering the industry with an advanced qualification (like a Master's or PhD), or pivot sideways from a related discipline.
University Degree
Usually 3 to 4 years of full-time academic study, explicitly preparing you for the theoretical realities of the industry.
Junior Archivist/Conservator/Curator
In this entry-level role, you will assist in the cataloguing and preservation of collections, gaining hands-on experience in conservation techniques and public engagement.
Mid-Level Archivist/Conservator/Curator
At this stage, you will take on more responsibility, managing specific collections, leading projects, and developing exhibitions that highlight the institution's assets.
Senior Archivist/Conservator/Curator
In a senior role, you will oversee collections management, strategic planning, and public outreach initiatives, shaping the future direction of the institution.
