Sociology

Sociology is the systematic study of human societies, examining how social structures, institutions, norms, and inequalities shape the lives of individuals and groups. It asks why some people have more power, wealth, and opportunity than others, how institutions such as the family, education, work, and healthcare operate, and how social change happens. Drawing on empirical research and theoretical analysis, sociology develops your ability to look critically at the world around you and to understand human behaviour in its social context rather than as the product of individual choice alone.

At Leeds Beckett University, this part-time programme allows you to develop your critical, analytical, and interpretive skills at a pace that fits alongside work and other commitments. You will build your knowledge of the foundational concepts and debates in the discipline, engaging with topics that span inequalities of class, gender, race, and age, alongside the sociological study of culture, identity, and global change. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and experience a different social and academic context that can deepen your sociological thinking.

Leeds Beckett describes the degree as preparing you for careers in social work, community development, and public health, which reflects the applied orientation of the programme.

Sociology graduates go on to work in a wide range of roles across the public, voluntary, and private sectors. Common destinations include social work, community development, public health, education, policy research, charities, housing, youth work, and the media.
