About this course

Mechatronics is the engineering discipline that integrates mechanical, electronic, computer and control systems to design intelligent machines and automated systems. From industrial robots and autonomous vehicles to medical devices and consumer electronics, mechatronic systems are at the heart of modern manufacturing and technology. Engineers who can work fluently across these traditionally separate disciplines are among the most versatile and in-demand in the engineering workforce, and a degree that includes a foundation year makes this demanding field accessible to students who need additional scientific and mathematical preparation.

At the University of Lincoln this four-year programme was founded in collaboration with Siemens, a partnership that reflects the school's philosophy of research-led teaching with strong industry connection. The foundation year builds the scientific and engineering foundations needed before you enter the full mechatronics curriculum, where you will study mechanical principles, electronics, software, control systems, and the integration of all four into complete engineered systems. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct experience in an engineering environment before you graduate.

Graduates of mechatronics find employment across a very wide range of industries, including manufacturing automation, automotive engineering, robotics, aerospace, defence, renewable energy, medical devices, and consumer electronics. Roles include systems engineer, robotics engineer, design engineer, control systems engineer, and technical project manager. Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through bodies such as the IMechE or IET.

Postgraduate study in robotics, advanced manufacturing, control engineering, or systems engineering is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue research. The combination of breadth and depth that mechatronics provides makes graduates genuinely valuable in teams where different engineering disciplines must collaborate.
