About this course

Computing for business and management applies the technical capabilities of computing to the real problems that organisations face, bridging the gap between software development and commercial decision-making. While pure computer science tends to focus on theoretical foundations and technical depth, computing for business focuses on how software, data and digital systems can be designed and deployed to improve how businesses operate, whether in finance, retail, logistics, healthcare or the public sector. Understanding both the technical and the commercial side makes you a more effective practitioner in a world where technology and business strategy are inseparable.

At the University of Sussex, this four-year full-time programme, which includes a foundation year and an industrial placement year, combines a professional education in computing with specialisation in applications relevant to commerce and management. You will study software development alongside business-facing applications of computing, building the technical skills to build and analyse systems while also understanding the organisational contexts in which those systems are deployed. The industrial placement year gives you sustained professional experience in a business or technology environment, developing the commercial awareness and workplace capability that employers in the sector value highly.

A typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the programme's accessibility to students from a range of backgrounds, and the combination of foundation year, technical training, business context and industrial placement makes this a thorough preparation for careers at the intersection of technology and management.

Graduates work as business analysts, software developers, systems analysts, project managers and technology consultants across a wide range of organisations. Roles in IT management, digital transformation and enterprise systems are natural destinations, as are positions in start-ups and technology companies where the ability to think commercially about software solutions is particularly prized. Postgraduate study in computer science, information systems or business analytics offers further pathways for those who wish to specialise.

A great decision
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit other U…

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links ma…
