About this course

Modern languages and history of art and visual culture is a combination that recognises how much visual culture and the languages in which it is produced, discussed, and theorised are intertwined. Art is made in specific linguistic and cultural contexts, and understanding a painting, a photograph, or a film in depth often requires access to the language and intellectual tradition from which it emerged. Conversely, studying a language fully involves encountering its visual culture, its art history, and the critical traditions that have shaped how writers, artists, and scholars have thought about the relationship between language and image.

At Royal Holloway, this four-year full-time joint honours degree combines study of a modern language with the history of art and visual culture, taught by academics with research expertise in European and world literatures and cultures. You will spend your third year abroad, immersing yourself in a language community and encountering visual culture in the settings where it is lived and displayed. The combination is taught by specialists whose research is multilingual, transnational, and interdisciplinary, reflecting the genuinely cross-cultural nature of the subjects.

The sandwich element gives you professional experience in a work environment, and work placement is integrated into the programme. You will develop high-level language skills alongside visual literacy and art historical knowledge, gaining the ability to engage critically with art produced in different linguistic and cultural contexts.

Royal Holloway's location in the Greater London area gives you access to some of the world's great art collections and galleries as an extension of your learning environment.

Graduates go on to careers in museums, galleries, art journalism, auction houses, cultural institutions, education, publishing, diplomacy, and the creative sector. Many continue to postgraduate study in modern languages, art history, or curatorial studies, building specialist expertise for research and professional roles.
