About this course

Environmental science is the multidisciplinary study of the natural world and the impact of human activity upon it. It draws on ecology, chemistry, geography, biology, and earth sciences to examine how ecosystems function, how pollutants spread through air, water, and soil, how climate systems operate, and how human decisions about land use, energy, and resource consumption shape the planet's future. At a time when environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to water scarcity and soil degradation, have become among the most urgent problems facing humanity, environmental scientists are increasingly essential to policy, business, and civic life.

At Aberystwyth University, this BSc programme is offered with an integrated year studying abroad at an international or European partner institution. This built-in international experience is a distinctive feature of the degree, giving you the opportunity to study environmental science in a different geographic, cultural, and academic context, encountering different ecosystems, regulatory frameworks, and approaches to environmental management firsthand. The main programme is delivered in one of the most picturesque and environmentally rich locations in Europe, and Aberystwyth's setting in mid-Wales provides direct access to a wide range of landscapes and ecosystems that support genuine fieldwork-based learning.

You will develop skills in ecological survey, environmental monitoring, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, and GIS, alongside the theoretical understanding of environmental systems and the policy and management frameworks through which societies attempt to address environmental challenges.

Graduates from environmental science degrees move into careers in environmental consultancy, conservation and ecology, government environmental agencies, local authority planning and sustainability, NGOs, water and utilities management, renewable energy, and research. Many pursue postgraduate study in environmental science, ecology, climate change, sustainable development, or related fields. The combination of scientific rigour and environmental awareness the degree develops is valued across a growing range of sectors as environmental regulation and sustainability practice expand.
