Nursing with Leadership Dual Field
Nursing with leadership in the dual field of mental health and adult nursing is a demanding and distinctive degree that prepares you to practise as a registered nurse in two separate fields while also developing the leadership capabilities that the profession increasingly needs. Mental health nursing and adult nursing serve different populations and require different clinical skills, but they also overlap: people with mental health conditions frequently have physical health needs, and adults with physical illness often experience significant psychological distress. Nurses who can work competently across this boundary are particularly well equipped for contemporary healthcare.
At the University of Leicester this four-year programme develops the clinical knowledge, skills, and professional values needed to register as a nurse in both fields, alongside an explicit focus on leadership. You will develop understanding of mental health conditions, their assessment and treatment, alongside the physical health nursing skills required for adult care, working in practice settings across both fields throughout the course. The leadership strand prepares you to understand what effective clinical and professional leadership looks like and why it matters to the quality and safety of care.
Nursing at this level is not only about individual patient care but about contributing to the systems and cultures within which care is delivered.
Dual-field registration is a significant professional asset, opening roles that require flexibility across mental health and physical health settings. Graduates work in hospitals, mental health trusts, community health services, primary care, and specialist services, and the leadership preparation positions you for progression into charge nurse, ward manager, and clinical lead roles. Further study at postgraduate level in advanced clinical practice, healthcare leadership, or specialist nursing is available for those who wish to develop their expertise.
The dual field qualification is also particularly valued in services that work with people whose needs span physical and mental health.
