Sport Coaching and Physical Education
Sport coaching and physical education is a discipline that develops your ability to support others in physical activity, whether in competitive sport, school settings, or community health contexts. Coaching is both a science and a relationship-based practice: it draws on exercise physiology, biomechanics, and psychology to inform how training is designed and delivered, while also requiring communication, empathy, and the capacity to motivate and develop people of different abilities and backgrounds. Physical education, as an academic and professional field, considers how physical activity is taught and valued in schools and communities, and how it contributes to lifelong health and wellbeing.
At the University of Cumbria, this four-year, full-time programme begins with an integrated foundation year, providing a supported entry point that builds your academic and practical preparation before you progress to the full degree. The foundation year gives you the knowledge and confidence to thrive in the subsequent three years of professional study. Across the degree, you will develop expertise in coaching theory and practice, exploring how athletes and participants develop physically, technically, tactically, and mentally.
The physical education strand prepares you to teach and support physical activity in educational settings, and the programme is accredited by CIMSPA, which provides professional recognition within the sport and physical activity sector. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points.
Graduates of sport coaching and physical education programmes work as sports coaches, PE teachers, performance analysts, community sport developers, and health and wellbeing practitioners in schools, clubs, leisure centres, NGBs, and local authorities. Many graduates go on to initial teacher training in physical education or pursue postgraduate qualifications in coaching, sport science, or sport management. The CIMSPA accreditation supports entry into professional roles across the sport, health, and fitness sector, and the foundation year route means the degree is accessible to students from a wide range of starting points.
