About this course

Marine biology is the scientific study of the organisms and ecosystems of the world's oceans, seas and coastal waters, from the microscopic phytoplankton that form the foundation of marine food webs to the great whales that represent the largest animals on earth. It draws on ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology, biochemistry and oceanography to understand how marine life functions, how species interact with each other and with their physical environment, and how human activities are affecting these systems. The health of marine ecosystems has consequences not just for ocean biodiversity but for climate regulation, fisheries and the hundreds of millions of people who depend on the sea for food and livelihood.

At the University of Salford, studied part-time, you will develop a systematic understanding of key aspects of the marine environment, including the biology of marine animals and the ecosystems they inhabit, alongside the oceanographic processes that shape those environments. You will study the science of climate change and its marine dimensions, the impacts of pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction on marine biodiversity, and the conservation and management approaches that aim to protect marine ecosystems. Research methods and field skills are central to the programme, developing the practical capability to collect and analyse marine biological data.

Graduates of marine biology work in marine conservation, fisheries management, environmental consultancy, government marine agencies, aquaculture, marine research institutes and NGOs focused on ocean health. Roles in marine protected area management, whale and dolphin research, coral reef conservation, environmental impact assessment for offshore developments and public education and outreach about the sea are among the destinations. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study or doctoral research in marine biology, fisheries science, oceanography or conservation biology, deepening their expertise for research or specialist professional roles.
