Geography/Celtic Studies

Geography and Celtic studies is a combination that brings together a dynamic, interdisciplinary social and natural science with the study of one of Europe's oldest living cultural and linguistic traditions. Geography addresses the surface of the Earth as the site of human living and working, considering the variability in physical and human landscapes and the complex interrelationships between them. It touches on coastal management, environmental hazards, migration, urban geography, and global issues, developing skills in qualitative and quantitative data analysis, fieldwork, and independent research.

Celtic studies adds the dimension of language, literature, history, and culture specific to the Celtic peoples of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, and beyond, including the Gaelic and Welsh languages and their associated literary and cultural traditions.

At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme combines these two areas of study in a structure that makes higher education accessible alongside work or other commitments. The programme includes a year abroad, which can provide the experience of studying in a Celtic-speaking community or in an environment where geography is studied from a different perspective. You will develop broad skills in geographical analysis alongside the linguistic and cultural knowledge that Celtic studies demands, producing a graduate profile that combines scientific and humanistic breadth.

Graduates from this combination are well placed for careers in heritage, environmental organisations, planning, education, Celtic language development and media, community development, research, and a wide range of public sector roles. The transferable skills the degree develops, including data analysis, independent research, and cross-disciplinary thinking, are valued in the labour market more broadly. Further study at postgraduate level in geography, Celtic studies, environmental management, or a related field is also a natural progression.
