English literature immerses you in one of the world's richest literary traditions, training you to read closely and critically across different historical periods, genres, and cultural contexts, from the medieval to the contemporary. Spanish opens access to a global language spoken by more than 450 million people as a first language, and to the extraordinary literary and cultural traditions of Spain and Latin America, from the Golden Age to magical realism and beyond.

At Dundee, this four-year programme develops your English literary knowledge across a broad range of periods, from the medieval through to the present day, with the flexibility to shape your studies towards your own interests as you advance. The Spanish strand takes you from the foundations of the language through to advanced proficiency, with a strong engagement with Hispanic literature and culture. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a Spanish-speaking country, which is essential for both linguistic development and the kind of cultural immersion that transforms language learning.

The two subjects complement each other, developing the close reading and critical thinking skills that transfer between literary traditions.

Graduates from English and Spanish programmes are valued across a wide range of careers.
