Zoology with Science Foundation Year
Zoology is the scientific study of animals in all their variety: their structure, physiology, behaviour, ecology and evolution. From the cellular machinery of individual organisms to the population dynamics of species in complex ecosystems, it engages with some of the most fascinating questions in biology, and with challenges, including biodiversity loss, habitat destruction and climate change, that are among the most urgent facing the natural world. A foundation year makes the programme accessible to students who need to build their scientific grounding before committing to a full science degree.
At the University of Lincoln, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad. The foundation year provides a rigorous introduction to the biological sciences, building the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at degree level. The sandwich and placement elements embed professional experience directly into the programme, giving you the opportunity to work in zoos, conservation organisations, research institutions, government agencies or other zoological settings before you graduate.
The year abroad extends your range further, allowing you to work with species and ecosystems in a different part of the world.
You will study animal diversity and classification, evolutionary biology, ecology, animal physiology and behaviour, conservation science and research methods, developing both laboratory and fieldwork skills alongside data analysis and scientific writing.
Graduates pursue careers in conservation management, ecological consultancy, zoo and wildlife management, animal welfare, research, veterinary science, government agencies, education and science communication. Some go on to postgraduate study or doctoral research in ecology, zoology, conservation biology or related fields. The combination of scientific rigour and practical fieldwork experience makes zoology graduates valuable across a broad range of environmental and biological employers.
