Zoology with Animal Behaviour is a degree that combines rigorous biological training with specialist focus on one of the most compelling aspects of the natural world: why animals behave as they do. Zoology is the scientific study of the animal kingdom, encompassing the anatomy, physiology, ecology, evolution and conservation of animals across the full diversity of life. Animal behaviour, or ethology, investigates the mechanisms and adaptive significance of what animals do, from the foraging strategies of individual insects to the complex social structures of primates, from migration patterns to mating systems.
At Bangor University, the three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of animal biology and behaviour within the context of evolutionary theory and ecological science. You will study comparative anatomy and physiology, genetics, ecology, evolutionary biology and the principles of animal behaviour, including the quantitative methods used to study behaviour in field and laboratory settings. Fieldwork is central to the discipline, and north Wales provides an excellent setting for wildlife study, with diverse upland, coastal, woodland and marine environments within easy reach of the campus.
The programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you a wide range of opportunities to develop practical experience and international perspectives.
