Zoology

Zoology is the scientific study of animals, examining their structure, function, behaviour, ecology, evolution and the extraordinary diversity of animal life across the tree of life. From the molecular mechanisms of development and the neurobiology of animal behaviour to the ecology of populations and the conservation of threatened species, zoology spans an enormous range of scales and approaches. It is a discipline driven by fundamental curiosity about the natural world, combined with increasingly urgent practical concerns about biodiversity loss and the need to understand and protect animal populations.

Nottingham Trent University offers this three-year full-time zoology degree, building a thorough grounding in the biological sciences alongside the specialist zoological content that makes the degree distinctive. You will study animal diversity across the major taxonomic groups, developing an understanding of anatomy, physiology, behaviour, ecology and evolutionary relationships. The degree develops strong practical skills in laboratory and fieldwork, and NTU's applied traditions and field facilities support meaningful engagement with animals and their habitats beyond the classroom.

You will also develop the quantitative and analytical skills needed to design and evaluate biological investigations and to work with ecological data.

Zoology trains careful observation, experimental and field skills, quantitative analysis and the ability to communicate scientific findings clearly. It also develops the passion for the natural world that motivates effective conservation and research practice.

Graduates pursue careers in conservation organisations, wildlife management, zoological collections and aquaria, ecological surveying, environmental consultancy, government environmental agencies, education and science communication. Many also go on to postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, animal behaviour, physiology or evolutionary biology, and doctoral research is the route for those seeking academic or senior research careers in the zoological sciences.
