Zoology

Zoology is the scientific study of animal life in all its extraordinary diversity and complexity. It engages with animals at every scale of biological organisation: from the molecular mechanisms of cell signalling and gene expression through the physiology of individual organisms to the behaviour of populations and the dynamics of ecosystems. Zoology is a discipline with both deep intellectual fascination and urgent practical relevance, as the accelerating loss of biodiversity and the disruption of natural systems make the work of understanding and protecting animal life more important than ever.

At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year full-time degree covers a wide range of topics, examining the molecular biology, genetics, and physiology of animals while discovering how these areas have shaped animal evolution and behaviour. Systems biology is integrated into the programme, bringing together different levels of biological understanding into a coherent view of how animals function. A sandwich year is built into the degree, and work placement is available, giving you the opportunity to apply your zoological knowledge in a professional setting before your final year.
