Zoology

Zoology is the scientific study of animals, encompassing the full range of vertebrate and invertebrate life and the ecological, evolutionary and physiological processes that shape it. It is a discipline that asks fundamental questions about how animals are constructed, how they function at the molecular and cellular level, how they behave in relation to their environment and each other, and how the extraordinary diversity of animal life has come to be through evolutionary processes. As biodiversity loss accelerates globally, zoology also carries urgent conservation relevance, making zoologists genuinely important contributors to addressing one of the defining challenges of the present century.

At Bangor, this three-year programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, making it one of the most richly structured zoology degrees available. The foundation year provides a thorough scientific and academic grounding before you enter the main programme. Bangor is a university with exceptionally strong natural science provision, and its location in North Wales gives you immediate access to diverse terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments that are central to zoological fieldwork.

You will develop your skills in anatomy and physiology, ecology, genetics, evolutionary biology and animal behaviour, combining laboratory and field-based learning throughout.

The sandwich year, year abroad and work placement give you professional and international experience that is unusual in the natural sciences, and that strengthens your profile considerably when you enter the job market.

Graduates move into conservation, ecological consultancy, wildlife management, zoo and aquarium management, environmental agencies, government bodies, research and science communication. Many continue to postgraduate study in ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation science or related disciplines.
