About this course

Zoo biology is the scientific study of animals in captive environments, drawing on zoology, ecology, conservation biology, and animal behaviour to understand both the biology of the animals themselves and the role that zoos and wildlife parks play in conservation, education, and the preservation of endangered species. It asks how captive animals can be kept in conditions that support their physical and psychological wellbeing, how zoo programmes contribute to the preservation of genetic diversity in threatened populations, and how research conducted in captive settings can inform conservation in the wild.

At Nottingham Trent University this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of animal biology, behaviour, nutrition, and welfare alongside the specific knowledge and skills that working with zoo animals requires. You will study ethology, ecology, conservation genetics, and the science of animal management, and you will benefit from NTU's connections to zoo and wildlife organisations that give the programme a practical as well as theoretical dimension.
