Working with Children, Young People and Families

Working with children, young people, and families is a discipline that takes seriously the complexity of the lives that children and young people lead, and the role that skilled, knowledgeable professionals can play in supporting them. It draws on child development, psychology, sociology, social policy, and community development to equip practitioners with both the theoretical grounding and the practical wisdom to work effectively in a range of settings, from schools and community organisations to advocacy and pastoral roles.

At the University of Hull, this accelerated two-year programme is designed for students who want to enter the children's, young people's, and families' workforce without spending three or four years in full-time study. The compressed format delivers the essential knowledge and skills needed to practice confidently in roles such as community development worker, advocacy worker, pastoral coordinator, and wellbeing coordinator, among others. You will study child development, family dynamics, safeguarding, the legal and policy frameworks governing services for children and young people, and the communication and relational skills that effective youth and family work demands.

The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points.

Graduates are well placed to enter a wide range of roles in schools, local authorities, charities, community organisations, and public health settings. The children's workforce is diverse and consistently in need of trained practitioners, and the accelerated format means graduates can enter professional life relatively quickly while still holding a full degree-level qualification. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate training in social work, education, counselling, or youth and community work, using the undergraduate degree as a foundation for specialist professional qualification.
