Woodland ecology and conservation addresses one of the most urgent challenges facing the natural world: how to protect and restore complex ecosystems at a time when biodiversity loss and climate change are reshaping the planet's living systems. Woodlands are not simply collections of trees; they are intricate ecological communities supporting thousands of species of plants, fungi, invertebrates, birds, and mammals, and they play a vital role in carbon storage, water regulation, and the provision of habitat connectivity across landscapes. Understanding how woodlands function, how they respond to disturbance, and how conservation and management interventions can be designed and evaluated requires scientific rigour and practical fieldwork skills.
At the University of Cumbria, this four-year full-time degree includes an integrated foundation year, which introduces you to the scientific principles and fieldwork skills that underpin the full programme. Cumbria's location provides direct access to woodland habitats for field-based learning, which is central to the course. You will study forest ecology, tree biology, woodland biodiversity, conservation management, and the environmental policy frameworks that govern how land is managed.
You will develop skills in ecological survey and monitoring, data analysis, and the design and evaluation of conservation projects.
You will engage with the twin challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss throughout the programme, examining both the threats facing woodland ecosystems and the practical interventions, from habitat restoration and rewilding to sustainable forest management, that can form part of the response.
Graduates work in conservation organisations, national parks, forestry commissions, environmental consultancies, local authorities, and research institutions. Roles include conservation officer, ecologist, woodland manager, environmental consultant, and biodiversity adviser. The practical fieldwork skills and ecological knowledge this degree provides are directly applicable in the field, and many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, or environmental management.
