About this course

Wildlife ecology and conservation science addresses one of the defining challenges of our time: the rapid loss of biodiversity and the degradation of the natural systems on which all life depends. The discipline combines the rigorous scientific study of wildlife and ecosystems with the applied knowledge needed to protect and restore them, and it operates at the intersection of biology, ecology, environmental science, and conservation management. It asks how wild populations function and respond to change, what the threats to biodiversity are and how they can be assessed, and how conservation interventions can be designed and evaluated to be most effective.

At the University of Suffolk, this four-year full-time programme with a foundation year provides a supported route for students who want to build their scientific foundation before entering the main degree. The foundation year introduces the biological and ecological concepts that the programme builds on, preparing you for the rigour of degree-level study in a field that combines field skills with quantitative analysis. You will study ecology, zoology, botany, conservation biology, field survey techniques, GIS, and environmental management, developing the knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute to the conservation of wildlife and habitats.

Suffolk's location in East Anglia, with access to a range of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems, provides a natural laboratory for fieldwork.

Graduates go on to careers in conservation organisations, national parks, wildlife trusts, environmental consultancy, countryside management, environmental education, and research. Roles in habitat management, species monitoring, ecological assessment, and conservation planning are all accessible to graduates with a strong background in wildlife ecology and conservation science. Many go on to postgraduate study to develop specialist expertise in areas such as conservation biology, ecological modelling, or environmental management, and some pursue research careers in universities or conservation organisations.
