Wildlife Conservation

Wildlife conservation is the science and practice of protecting animal species and their habitats in the face of rapid environmental change. Biodiversity loss is one of the defining crises of the present century, driven by habitat destruction, climate change, invasive species, overexploitation, and pollution, and the people who have the knowledge to understand and address it are urgently needed. Conservation biology draws on ecology, behaviour, genetics, and earth science to develop the scientific understanding on which effective conservation depends, while also engaging with the management, policy, and community dimensions of real-world conservation work.

At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme develops both the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills needed to work in wildlife conservation. You will study animal function and behaviour, ecological processes, conservation biology, and the management of habitats and wild populations. Fieldwork is central to the curriculum, developing your ability to identify, monitor, and assess the status of wildlife in real environments.

You will engage with the global challenges facing wild species, including the effects of habitat fragmentation, and explore the range of tools and approaches used to address them, from captive breeding and reintroduction to habitat restoration and international conservation law.

You will develop ecological expertise, field and laboratory skills, and the ability to engage critically with conservation science and practice. The programme also cultivates the communication and advocacy skills that conservation work increasingly requires.

Graduates pursue careers in wildlife trusts and conservation NGOs, national parks, government environmental agencies, zoos and aquaria, environmental consultancy, ecological surveying, science communication, and international conservation organisations. Postgraduate study in conservation biology, ecology, zoology, or wildlife management is a natural route for those seeking research positions or specialist professional roles.
