About this course

Visual effects and motion graphics are the disciplines that sit behind the images, sequences, and animated elements that audiences see in film, television, advertising, online content, and game cinematics. Visual effects, or VFX, involves the integration of computer-generated imagery with live-action footage to create scenes, environments, and events that could not be captured practically. Motion graphics applies design principles to animated and moving visual communication, spanning everything from broadcast title sequences and brand identity animations to data visualisation and user interface design.

Both disciplines demand a rare combination of technical precision and creative thinking.

At Brunel this three-year full-time programme is accredited by ScreenSkills, the industry-led skills body for the UK's screen-based industries, which means the curriculum is designed in close alignment with what employers in the sector actually need. The programme is practical and hands-on, combining digital technology with creative design to give you the knowledge and skills required by the VFX and motion graphics sector. You will work with industry-standard software and pipelines, developing technical competence in areas such as compositing, 3D animation, rigging, lighting, rendering, and design for motion, alongside the creative and critical thinking needed to apply those skills with originality and professional quality.

The showreel of graduating students' work demonstrates the level of output the programme is designed to produce.

Graduates find careers in film and television production companies, VFX studios, broadcast companies, advertising agencies, games studios, and digital media agencies. Roles including compositor, motion designer, 3D generalist, animator, and broadcast designer are among the most common entry points, with career development often moving towards specialisation in particular aspects of the pipeline or into supervisory and creative direction roles. The ScreenSkills accreditation provides a recognised credential within the industry.

Some graduates also pursue postgraduate study in animation, film production, or design, or develop freelance careers in the expanding digital content economy.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local…
