Veterinary Nursing

Veterinary nursing is a hands-on clinical profession that supports the work of veterinary surgeons in delivering care to animals across a wide range of species and settings. Registered veterinary nurses play a central role in anaesthesia, surgical support, emergency care, diagnostic imaging, ward management, and client communication, and the profession requires both technical precision and a genuine commitment to animal welfare. This four-year full-time programme at Middlesex University includes a foundation year, giving you structured preparation for the clinical and academic demands of the main degree before you progress into advanced study. You will develop the practical skills and underpinning scientific knowledge required for professional registration, covering animal anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, surgical nursing, and the ethical and legal frameworks that govern veterinary practice. Clinical placements are central to the programme, giving you hands-on experience in real veterinary environments where you will apply your learning under professional supervision.

On completing this programme and gaining registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, you will be qualified to work as a registered veterinary nurse in first-opinion practices, referral hospitals, emergency centres, university veterinary hospitals, and the animal welfare sector. Career progression can lead to senior nurse roles, clinical leadership, specialist nursing in areas such as oncology or cardiology, or education and training. Some graduates also use the programme as a stepping stone into veterinary medicine or pursue postgraduate study in veterinary science, clinical animal behaviour, or related fields.
