Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Surgery
Veterinary medicine and surgery is a demanding and rewarding profession that requires the combination of deep scientific knowledge, practical clinical skills, strong communication ability and the emotional resilience to manage complex and sometimes distressing situations. Vets diagnose and treat disease and injury across a wide range of animal species, advise on preventive health, support public health surveillance for zoonotic diseases and work in research that advances both animal and human medicine. The training required is among the most intensive in higher education, and the resulting qualification is among the most highly regarded.
At the University of Nottingham this five-year programme develops your clinical reasoning, diagnostic skills and practical capability across a curriculum that integrates the biomedical sciences with clinical training from early in the programme. You will study anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and epidemiology alongside clinical medicine in companion animals, farm animals, horses and exotic species, building the breadth of knowledge that modern veterinary practice demands. Clinical placements are central to the programme, giving you hands-on experience in real practice settings that develop your skills and professional judgement under supervision.
Nottingham's integrated approach to teaching means the connections between basic science and clinical reasoning are made explicit throughout, rather than being treated as separate phases of training.
Most graduates enter private veterinary practice, working in small animal, mixed, equine or farm animal settings. Public health and government veterinary roles, including work with the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the Food Standards Agency, draw others. Research careers in academia and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are a further option, particularly for those who develop a strong interest in a specific scientific area during their training.
Some graduates move into zoo and wildlife medicine, conservation science or international development roles focused on livestock health in lower-income countries. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons registration that follows graduation is the gateway to all clinical practice in the UK.
