Veterinary Medicine and Science

Veterinary medicine and science is one of the most demanding and rewarding degree programmes available, combining rigorous scientific education with the practical clinical training needed to diagnose and treat disease in a wide range of animal species. Vets must understand anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, pathology and surgery, and they must apply this knowledge with skill, judgement and compassion in clinical settings that range from companion animal practice to farm animal medicine, equine work, exotic species, wildlife and public health. The profession is regulated, and completing the degree leads to eligibility to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

At the University of Surrey, this five-year full-time programme combines scientific depth with a strong focus on preparing you for the digital and data-driven aspects of modern veterinary practice. You will study the full range of biomedical sciences alongside clinical training in different species and contexts, building both the theoretical understanding and the practical competence that professional veterinary work requires. Clinical placements are central to the degree, taking you into practice settings where you develop hands-on skills in examination, diagnosis, treatment and surgical procedures under experienced supervision. The ability to communicate with animal owners, to work under pressure and to take responsibility for patient welfare are all developed alongside scientific and clinical knowledge.

Graduates register with the RCVS and move into companion animal practice, farm animal medicine, equine practice, exotic and zoo animal medicine, government and regulatory veterinary services, research, the pharmaceutical industry, and public health. The profession offers substantial variety and long-term career development, and postgraduate study or certificate programmes are available for those who want to specialise further.
