Ukrainian and Portuguese

Ukrainian and Portuguese represent two of the most geographically and culturally significant languages on the European and global stage. Ukrainian, a Slavic language with a rich literary tradition and deep connections to the history of Eastern Europe, has gained renewed global attention as one of the most important languages for understanding the politics and culture of the region. Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, the language of Brazil, Portugal, and a constellation of nations across Africa, linking some of the most dynamic and diverse cultures and economies of the modern world.

Studying both together provides a genuinely distinctive and intellectually enriching perspective.

At University College London, this four-year programme develops advanced proficiency in both languages alongside serious engagement with the cultures, histories, and literatures they represent. You will work on grammar, writing, speaking, and listening in Ukrainian and Portuguese at an advanced level, reading literary and non-literary texts in their original languages and developing the nuanced comprehension that comes only from sustained, deep engagement with a language. You will also explore the cultural and historical contexts of the Ukrainian- and Portuguese-speaking worlds, examining literature, film, history, and contemporary affairs through the lens of each language.

This is a four-year full-time programme. Graduates with this combination of languages are particularly well placed for careers in diplomacy, international affairs, translation and interpreting, journalism, the foreign service, international business, and organisations working in Eastern Europe, Brazil, or the Lusophone world. Further study at postgraduate level in translation, area studies, or comparative literature is also a natural pathway.

The ability to communicate and think across two quite different linguistic and cultural traditions is a rare and highly valued capability.
