About this course

Theoretical physics is the branch of physics that seeks to explain the fundamental laws governing the universe through mathematical analysis and conceptual reasoning. Where experimental physics tests ideas through observation and measurement, theoretical physics constructs the frameworks, from quantum mechanics and relativity to field theory and cosmology, within which those observations are interpreted. It is a demanding and intellectually rewarding discipline that develops the capacity for sustained abstract thinking alongside powerful mathematical and computational skills.

At York, this four-year programme combines rigorous theoretical physics training with a year in industry, and also includes a year abroad. You will develop mathematical analysis and computational methods to address complex physical problems, learning to write scientific reports and to work with the standards of professional practice in physics. The programme makes use of the university's high-performance computing resources, giving you experience of simulating large physical systems, which is an increasingly important part of modern theoretical physics research.

The year in industry gives you the opportunity to apply your skills in a professional context, whether in a technology company, a research organisation, a finance institution or another setting that draws on the quantitative expertise of physicists.

The analytical and computational abilities developed through theoretical physics are among the most transferable produced by any university degree. Finance and quantitative analysis, data science, software engineering, scientific computing, defence and the technology industries all recruit theoretical physicists. Academic research, including doctoral study in physics, mathematics or related fields, is a natural route for those drawn to the frontier of scientific inquiry.

Postgraduate study in areas such as quantum computing, astrophysics, or mathematical physics is also a strong option.
