About this course

Theoretical physics is the branch of physics that seeks to explain natural phenomena through mathematical models and formal frameworks rather than primarily through experiment. It asks the deepest questions about the nature of matter, energy, space and time, working at the interface where observation meets abstraction. Theoretical physicists constructed quantum mechanics, general relativity, the Standard Model of particle physics and the modern understanding of cosmology, and the field continues to push at the frontier of human knowledge through approaches including string theory, quantum information and the physics of complex systems.

At the University of Leeds, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial practical and international experience alongside your academic study. You will use mathematical methods to explore the physics that governs the world, developing both a rigorous theoretical understanding of the core areas of the discipline and the quantitative problem-solving skills that are valued across a wide range of industries.
